Dear Michigan Community,

The University of Michigan is a leader among public higher education institutions that prides itself in using its innovation and expertise to serve the public good and to uphold our democratic values. This includes respecting our differences, finding what we hold in common, and working together.

In June 2024, President Ono launched the Year of Democracy, Civic Empowerment, and Global Engagement steering committee. As a university-wide effort, this initiative will guide us through a year dedicated to programming, opportunities, and exploration that embodies the spirit of deep listening and learning—hallmarks of the U-M experience that are vital to active participation in a democratic society.

We know that democracy is inherently complex and sometimes messy. It involves navigating diverse perspectives and grappling with difficult conversations. Yet, it is precisely this complexity that makes our commitment to this theme year both necessary and timely. The Year of Democracy reflects our dedication to leveraging Michigan’s expertise to inspire minds, shape futures, and spark meaningful dialogue as we confront the pressing national and global challenges of the 21st century.

This year, we aim to reaffirm our identity as leaders in the pursuit of democratic values, embracing the complexity of the process while affirming our shared commitment to the common good. We believe that through civic engagement, we can navigate the complexities of a democratic society together.

We recognize that democracy depends on diverse perspectives and in that spirit hope to inspire everyone to be a part of this democracy theme year. If you are hosting an event that you would like to share on our website or you would like to explore opportunities for collaboration, please complete this form. We also welcome your suggestions for areas of exploration. Reach out to us at [email protected].

Together, let’s embrace the challenges of democracy and strive to practice it in all we do.
