A Journey of Institutional Self-Discovery

February 27, 2025

Announced in 2022 (and partly growing out of projects like the African American Student Project) the University of Michigan’s Inclusive History Project (IHP) aims to document a comprehensive history of diversity, equity, and inclusion across University of Michigan's campuses.

The Inclusive History Project organizes its work in four "frames", or themes in which they structure the research. The first is Origins & Trajectories, which houses projects that recontextualize past narratives and highlight previously ignored stories. The second, People & Communities, includes projects focused on the experiences of individuals and communities on and around U-M campuses, and how different policies and practices have affected those experiences.

Sites & Symbols organizes projects that examine symbolic and material sites across campus. This third frame looks at these sites of memorialization and commemoration, and how they affect inclusion at the University. The fourth frame, Research & Teaching, houses projects aimed at reflecting on the ways research and teaching have been practiced, resourced, and evaluated at U-M.
