About
In June 2024, the Year of Democracy, Civic Empowerment, and Global Engagement theme year was launched as a pillar of Vision 2034. As a university-wide effort, this initiative guided us through a year dedicated to programming, opportunities, and exploration that embodies the spirit of deep listening and learning—hallmarks of the U-M experience that are vital to active participation in a democratic society.
We know that democracy is inherently complex and sometimes messy. It involves navigating diverse perspectives and grappling with difficult conversations. Yet, it is precisely this complexity that made our commitment to this theme year both necessary and timely. The Year of Democracy reflected our dedication to leveraging Michigan’s expertise to inspire minds, shape futures, and spark meaningful dialogue as we confront the pressing national and global challenges of the 21st century.
While the Year of Democracy theme year has concluded, democracy is constant endeavor and our commitment has not ended. Our team will continue our work embodying and uplifting the spirit of democracy as the Initiative for Democracy & Civic Empowerment through 2026.
We aim to reaffirm our identity as leaders in the pursuit of democratic values, embracing the complexity of the process while affirming our shared commitment to the common good. We believe that through civic engagement, we can navigate the complexities of a democratic society together.
We recognize that democracy depends on diverse perspectives and in that spirit hope to inspire everyone to engage in democracy.
